Our Mission
WAWA/WeAreWideAwake is my Public Service to America as a muckracker who has journeyed seven times to Israel Palestine since June 2005. WAWA is dedicated to confronting media and governments that shield the whole truth.

We who Are Wide Awake are compelled by the "fierce urgency of Now" [Rev MLK, Jr.] to raise awareness and promote the human dialogue about many of the crucial issues of our day: the state of our Union and in protection of democracy, what life is like under military occupation in Palestine, the Christian EXODUS from the Holy Land, and spirituality-from a Theologically Liberated Christian Anarchist POV.

Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. -July 4, 1776.  Four assassinated in Bethlehem

Kristen Ess - A heavy round of firing began just after 6:15 pm, Wednesday evening in Bethlehem. Israeli Special Forces had invaded the city. Within moments the sirens of ambulances were wailing through the streets as the shooting continued. Cars began honking in order to quickly get out of harms way. Israeli forces had just assassinated four members of the armed resistance, among them being an Islamic Jihad leader, Mohammad Shehada, whom the Israelis had at the top of their "wanted" list.

Reports from witnesses indicate that the four men were in a car in central Bethlehem when Israeli Special Forces stormed the area in a Ford van, wearing civilian attire, and opened fire.

In addition to killing Mohammad Shehada, Israeli forces killed Issa Marzouq, another prominent figure from Islamic Jihad in Bethlehem. Emad Kamal is also from Saraya Al Quds, the armed resistance wing of Islamic Jihad. The fourth man killed was Ahmed Balboul of Fateh's Al Aqsa Brigades.

The hit was immediate, there was no exchange of fire, just a steady stream of bullets from the Israeli Special Forces. The scene is a bloody mess, with dozens of people rushing into the streets to view the damage to the bullet-riddled car and to try to follow the corpses to Al Hussein, Beit Jala, Government Hospital.

Shehada had been living "under ground" on and off for months, as his arrest or assassination was impening, but made periodic public appearances. For his part, Marzouq remained in public much of that time, according to a source in the Palestinian security.

Just days ago Israeli forces spent hours invading Bethlehem, destroying Shehada's home and that of his father, while also arresting his brother.

Later this evening Israeli forces invaded eastern Bethlehem's Tekua' Village and opened fire as young people threw stones.

Israeli aircraft continued to periodically fly overhead for hours during and after the assassination.

The funerals

Kristen Ess – Thousands of people are praying in Manger Square, between the mosque and the church. It is a sunny day in Bethlehem, and one of the saddest that the city has felt in years.

The bodies of the four men killed, their lives and deaths, are being honored Thursday. There is a comprehensive strike throughout the governorate, called for by the Bethlehem Governor, Dr. Victor Batarsa. A three-day mourning period is underway for the members of the "political resistance" as the victims are being described. Some 20,000 Palestinians are participating in the funerals.

The Sheikhs are out of the mosques, delivering sermons among the people. The bodies are wrapped, with faces still stained from the wounds that could not be entirely cleaned showing bits of blood and bruising.

Flags of Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Fateh, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and those of Palestine, are waving in the breeze.

After this morning’s procession from the Beit Jala Hospital to Manger Square, and when noon prayers had finished, the bodies were carried, slowly despite the chaos, down the winding hills to the cemetery.

Women, small children, men, friends and family are all present. As the throngs pour down the hill from Manger Square, the young men shout that god is great. The women shout out the names of the victims.

One woman says, “16 orphans in a single day.” Another says of one of those killed, “Four boys and two girls.” Everyone says that they are afraid for their own children, and that is the idea of Israeli “peace.”

Forty-eight year old leader within the Islamic Jihad movement, Mohammad Shehada, was imprisoned and released during a prisoner exchange in the 1980s. He was at the top of the Israeli "wanted" list, although had not engaged in armed resistance for years, as mourners said.

Thirty-six year old Issa Mazouq was a graduate of Bethlehem University, a reporter in the past for the Lebanese television station, Al Manar, and also a member of Islamic Jihad.

Thirty-five year old Emad Kamal Hassan was described as "always having a smile on his face." He too was a member of Islamic Jihad.

Forty-eight year old Ahmed Balboul of Fateh's Al Aqsa Brigades ran for the local Legislative Council elections. He was political, as were all of those killed in Bethlehem yesterday. He spent 10 years in Israeli prison. None among them had not been imprisoned at one time or another.

As the crowds continue to stream into the cemetery, the chanting continues, some for a collective nationalism, some for freedom for Palestine, and some shouting that their deaths will not go unpunished.

Press Release, March 13,  2008:

Gush Shalom: Assassinations in Bethlehem and Tulkarm - grave

The government does not want a ceasefire, but a new flareup

Those who sent the assassins to carry out "liquidations" today, in Tulkarmand Bethlehem, knew what they were doing - a grave act of provocation which might blow up the serious chance which had opened up, to reach ceasefire and calm. This is a wanton, completely irresponsible act, which might return the inhabitants of Sderot, Ashkelon and Gaza back into the hell from which they momentarily escaped.

The lethal propaganda perpetrated today is the latest in a whole week of provocations:

 1. the Prime Minister approving settlement construction, spitting in the face of the entire world;

2. the incitement in the Knesset,  even by the Speaker, to the vengeful destruction of a family house for a crime of which none of the people
 living there is guilty;

3. the rabbis who openly and insolently encourage their disciples to commit indiscriminate killings;

4. and also the small-minded boycott declared against the Al-Jazeera TV, whose only sin was to expose to the world's gaze horrors which the Government of Israel wanted to hide.

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

© 1968, 2001 Kent M. Keith

" In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway."-Mother Teresa

“You cannot talk like sane men around a peace table while the atomic bomb itself is ticking beneath it. Do not treat the atomic bomb as a weapon of offense; do not treat it as an instrument of the police. Treat the bomb for what it is: the visible insanity of a civilization that has obey the laws of life.”- Lewis Mumford, 1946

The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures."  - William Fulbright

“Any nation that year after year continues to raise the Defense budget while cutting social programs to the neediest is a nation approaching spiritual death.” - Rev. MLK
Establishment of Israel
"On the day of the termination of the British mandate and on the strength of the United Nations General Assembly declare The State of Israel will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel: it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion it will guarantee freedom of religion [and] conscience and will be faithful to the Charter of the United Nations." - May 14, 1948. The Declaration of the Establishment of Israel
