Our Mission
WAWA/WeAreWideAwake is my Public Service to America as a muckracker who has journeyed seven times to Israel Palestine since June 2005. WAWA is dedicated to confronting media and governments that shield the whole truth.

We who Are Wide Awake are compelled by the "fierce urgency of Now" [Rev MLK, Jr.] to raise awareness and promote the human dialogue about many of the crucial issues of our day: the state of our Union and in protection of democracy, what life is like under military occupation in Palestine, the Christian EXODUS from the Holy Land, and spirituality-from a Theologically Liberated Christian Anarchist POV.

IDF says will stop flotilla, but transfer supplies to Gaza

Military launches PR counterattack against humanitarian ship convoy; says will arrest passengers, transfer cargo to Strip

Hanan Greenberg

The IDF on Wednesday announced its plan of action vis-a-vis the "break the siege" flotilla making its way to the Gaza Strip. The convoy, organized by activists from around the world, is slated to arrive to the Gaza shores during the upcoming weekend.

According to its plan, the IDF will alert the participating ships, within different ranges, and urge them to turn around. If the vessels continue to advance – its passengers will be detained by the navy and returned to their countries in accordance with the Ministry of Interior.

The IDF also decided it will transfer the humanitarian supplies carried on the ships to the Gaza Strip, after they undergo a security check.

As part of the military preparation, the navy carried out an exercise intercepting ships and arresting passengers.

Navy Commander Major-General Eliezer Marom said the navy forces will use measures to protect the soldiers' lives and ensure that there are no terrorist elements or explosives on the ships.

Marom said he instructed the forces to act sensibly and avoid provocations, adding that the IDF had no intention of harming the hundreds of passengers on board these ships.

PR counterattack

Prior to making the announcement, IDF launched a PR counterattack against the international flotilla. Head of Gaza's Coordination and Liaison Authority, Colonel Moshe Levi convened a press conference and said that there was no shortage in food and supplies in the Strip.

"The planned flotilla to Gaza is a provocative act that is unnecessary under the existing conditions in the Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian situation is good and stable," he said, adding that Israel allows many products into the Strip, and only limits those that might serve Hamas in advancing terror activities.

According to the security establishment's data, 100 trucks enter the Strip daily. In recent months, these trucks transported over 1,200 tons of medical supplies, 155 tons of food, 2,900 tons of clothing and footgear and about 17 million liters (about 4.5 million gallons) of diesel fuel.

The security establishment reiterated that it did not restrict the entrance of supplies into the Strip, noting that it only restricts materials that might be used by Hamas for terror activities.

"We do not know of a shortage in any department, and allow bringing in different equipment, as well as export out agricultural produce. Of course whatever can serve the Hamas in strengthening its military is not allowed in," said col. Levi during a journalists' briefing at Erez crossing.

On November 19, 2008, I wrote:

What do Zimbabwe, Burma, North Korea and Israel have in Common?

They are the ONLY states in the world that deny international media and humanitarian aid workers access.

On November 18, 2008, I and forty seven international ecumenical Christians and other people of faith rolled out of bed before 5 AM to travel from Jerusalem to the Erez Crossing in the Gaza Strip.

We went to stand up as a united people of conscience in NONVIOLENT Solidarity with the people of Gaza and in support of all the NGO’s that have been denied access into the Gaza Strip for over two weeks.

We went in love and for love of all of God’s children;

Be they the oppressed or the oppressors,

Those imprisoned by walls and those who erect them,

Those who are denied clean water and their deniers,

Those whose fears rule their hearts and the heartbroken,

Those whose ideology, greed, apathy, and power blind them to their culpability, responsibilities and obligations.

We went with hope to arouse the consciences of the leaders of the world to seek peace through justice; equal human rights for all.

Some media turned out for the NGO meeting we attended in the parking lot at Erez Crossing-NOT USA media needless to say-more on that to follow asap;

Because of poor Internet connection and lack of time to investigate-I have no 'official' confirmation, but the word on the street in Jerusalem is that the Israeli OCCUPYING Forces tanks rolled back into Gaza shortly after we departed.

Israel and the USA both signed the Geneva Convention. That makes them BOTH legally, morally and ethically RESPONSIBLE for the 1.5 million open air prisoners of Gaza; 60% are children under the age of 18 years old!

May God have mercy on those who do NOT know what they are doing -BUT, NO DOUBT they KNOW perfectly well and that has got-and keeps- my Irish up and flaming.

November 21, 2008: Telling The Truth About Gaza

A Declaration of Support for the Break the Siege Flotilla on Behalf of Citizens of Israel

We, Israeli citizens, would like to express our full support for the "Break the Siege" flotilla to Gaza and to over 700 activists on board.

This courageous effort demonstrates growing international impatience towards Israel's flagrant violation of international and human rights laws in Gaza and in other occupied territories.

We are appalled by Israeli propaganda, which continues to deny the suffering of the people in Gaza under the siege. We hold Israel accountable for the crimes that took place during the Cast Lead assault and thereafter; offenses in which the US, the EU, and the rest of the international community are complicit.

The Israeli siege imposes economic and political isolation on the people of Gaza and deprives them of the most basic rights: the rights to travel freely, study, work, receive medical treatment, and engage in the social, political and cultural life of the Palestinian people.

To all this we say:

And from Ziyaad's email of earlier this morning a sample letter; mention that Americans are on board those ships, e.g. 85 yr old Holocaust survivor  Hedy Epstein and Ret. Col. Ann Wright. - ( for pre-written fax to multiple recipients, etc.)

Palestinians in Gaza count on us to break the siege, if we could not join the brave activists on the boat the very least we can do is to urge politicians to uphold international law and stop the Israeli pirates!

Distribute this message widely!

Ziyaad Lunat

Model Letter to Catherine Ashton (adapt to your MP):

Dear Lady Ashton,

The EU has the obligation to uphold international law. Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza by maintaining a savage siege aimed at all 1.5 million Palestinians living there. Israel has banned badly needed reconstruction material from Gaza as well as items like fruit juice, coriander and school text books. This is unacceptable.

EU countries have FAILED in their responsibilities towards the Occupied Population as High Contracting Parties of the Geneva Convention. Citizens are taking this responsibility into their own hands, given the failure of our governments to act. On their way to Gaza now are eight cargo ships as part of a flotilla aimed at breaking the criminal siege. The ships carry 10 000 tons of badly needed goods such as reconstruction materials and text books for the children of Gaza. There are 600 passengers aboard, the majority EU citizens, including a Nobel prize laureate, an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor and several elected lawmakers from Europe and beyond.

Israel has threatened to stop the flotilla at international waters. You toured last week East Africa countries as part of an "anti-piracy"tour. Israel's violent efforts against unarmed are not only piracy but a grave breach of their obligations under international law, tantamount to war crimes. Will you do anything to stop Israel? Will EU Navy send ships to protect the civilian Gaza aid flotilla from armed piracy threats from Israel? No more double standards.

We demand immediate intervention from the EU to allow for the safe passage of the civilian boat to Gaza. This is a legal obligation towards international law, an obligation to protect EU citizens from attack at international waters and a HUMAN imperative. Gaza cannot wait any longer!

Kind Regards,

From the Catholic Worker

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

“You cannot talk like sane men around a peace table while the atomic bomb itself is ticking beneath it. Do not treat the atomic bomb as a weapon of offense; do not treat it as an instrument of the police. Treat the bomb for what it is: the visible insanity of a civilization that has obey the laws of life.”- Lewis Mumford, 1946

The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures."  - William Fulbright
