We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. -July 4, 1776. April-December 27, 2007 Articles: The New Fourth Estate and Vanunu
And so this was Christmas in the USA and Israel
UPDATE: From a Dec. 27 email from Vanunu:
"...they were very harsh to the young German girl, they were questioning here like by the KGB,or Stasi, she was in a separate room. She was still there after i left at 24:00. I did not go to Bethlehem, because I knew they were waiting for me. So do what ever you can ,you are in a free country. Next court hearing Jan. 8."
UPDATE: In an email from Vanunu received on Dec. 26 AM he wrote:
Bad news, Dec. 25 th. The police come to the American Colony to arrest me. I was meeting a young German girl who wanted to know more about my story. They took us to the police questioning me, hold me until midnight 24:00. Not so impressive all this again arrest. I think the police was waiting for my arrest in Beet Lehem, since I did come to B L. they found new reason to arrest me. Any way life will continue as I am doing all the Time. vmjc
On December 24, 2007 I wrote:
On Christmas Eve evening I picked up my mail and opened up a card from Jerusalem sent to me by Mordechai Vanunu. He made me laugh out loud, for he addressed it to: "Eileen Flaming" not Fleming, which is my actual name.
But, upon reflection, I think Vanunu has renamed me well; for I am flaming over the hypocrisy and injustice of empire and apathy and ignorance of good Christians who have no eyes to see, ears to hear, or hearts that bleed for the poor and oppressed in the Holy land and the entire Middle East.
I picked my Christmas Eve mail up three years to the very hour to when I had first read an article by Jerry Levin about Vanunu's 2004 Christmas Eve arrest for attempting to travel the less than two hour walk from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Levin was a former CNN Mid East Bureau Chief of the 1980's who had been a secular Jew held hostage by the Lebanese Hezbollah. Levin escaped his captivity unharmed shortly after a mystical Christmas Eve experience of Jesus and had become a full time volunteer with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron. Levin's article about Vanunu's Christmas Eve arrest got my Irish temper flaming about the injustices Israel is allowed to perpetuate; and three Christmas' later, my flaming Irish temper persists.
In 2004, Vanunu had attempted to celebrate his first Christmas Eve Mass as a Christian in the Little Town of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, which is in Occupied Territory. Instead of mass, Israel arrested him and Vanunu spent Christmas Eve night in prison for Israel claimed Vanunu was "attempting to leave the county" which they have not allowed.
Israel claims they cannot let Vanunu leave Isreal for they believe he still has another secret to tell about their WMD Program in the Negev, which has never allowed international inspectors into and which Vanunu has not set into in over 21 years. Leaving Israel is all Vanunu has desired since his April 21, 2004 release from 18 years in prison for telling the world the truth that Israel was already nuclear in 1986.
When I read Jerry Levin's article about Vanunu's Christmas Eve arrest, I became flaming mad for I could not comprehend how a democracy could deny anyone from worshipping any where and any how they desired. On Christmas Eve 2004, I spent hours at my computer emailing Mr. Bill O'Reilly-the champion of the "war on Christmas" and my local paper; the Orlando Sentinel, the New York Times and dozens of other MSM outlets, in the naïve belief that the Fourth Estate reported the truth and had the best interests of America and democracy at heart.
How little I knew about how deluded I was back then.
In the olden days of 2004, I had not yet taken my first of five journeys into Israel Palestine. In 2004, I naively/ignorantly believed that the USA Fourth Estate reported the truth and cared about the best interests of America. I once thought the USA MSM would be enraged that a Christian from Jerusalem would be denied the right to enter the Little Town of Bethlehem and celebrate the birth of a little child named Jesus who was born, lived and died under Military occupation. But I am not as naïve or uninformed as I had once been.
In 2007, the USA Fourth Estate has also ignored that Israel "blocked clergy from reaching their churches and Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem and elsewhere in the Holy Land…The Israeli authorities are arbitrarily denying entry to clergy and volunteers belonging to or working for Christian institutions and service providers. The clergy being harassed and denied entry to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) join tens of thousands of ordinary foreign passport holders of Palestinian and non-Palestinian origin who wish to be with their families, work or study, as well as tourists and pilgrims…In addition, there appears to be a new policy by Israel to refuse entry or visa extension for foreign, primarily Western, Christian volunteers working with various Christian organizations here. This is affecting the viability of these organizations and the normal connection with their supporters and fellow Christians in the countries that contribute to the presence of these Christian workers. They represent mainstream Christian and faith-based groups, such as the World Council of Churches and the American Friend's Service Committee that advocate non- violence and brotherhood and are in no way a threat to the security of Israel…Israel has continued to pursue both policies and practices that fail to comply with International Humanitarian Law."-Press Release Dec. 24, 2007, from www.RightToEnter.
The USA MSM totally ignored this abomination as it has also ignored one of the most historic stories of the 21st Century: Vanunu's Freedom of Speech Trial in the 'democracy' of Israel; which is no democracy at all, unless you are a Jew.
I contend that Vanunu is a prophet, and prophets do not necessarily predict the future, but point out the disaster ahead, provoke people to think about God and shine a brighter light onto what has already been revealed. The ancient Hebrew prophets were always ignored, ridiculed or demonized in their life times and so, I also contend, that Vanunu qualifies as one.
The last time I crossed paths with Vanunu, was in July of this year directly in front of Saint Stephen's Church in East Jerusalem and he told me, "This is the very spot where they stoned to death the first Christian martyr for freedom of speech."
Prophets and martyrs have always agitated empire and empire has always sought to render a society subservient by dividing and thus conquer a people.
Big Brother and the MSM in the USA label indigenous people throughout the Middle East who have risen up and are fighting for control of their own lives and homeland as terrorists and negates the terror America, the Industrial Military Complex and the inhumanity of military occupation has done unto them.
The neo-con philosophy infused with the heretical Christian Zionist theology has cut off American Christians from the very root of what the Prince of Peace/Jesus was all about. Jesus never demanded he be worshipped, but he promised that it is the peacemakers who are the children of God; and NOT those who bomb, torture of occupy others.
No Way did Jesus ever say that "SECURITY" –the blanket excuse of empire builders to justify and deny basic human rights and international law-is OK!
The term 'Christian' was not even coined until the days of Paul, about 3 decades after Jesus walked the earth a man. Jesus was never a Christian, but he was a social justice, radical revolutionary Palestinian devout Jewish road warrior who rose up and challenged the job security of the Temple authorities by teaching the people they did NOT need to pay the priests for ritual baths or sacrificing livestock to be OK with God; for God already LOVED them just as they were: sinners, poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Roman Military Occupation.
What got Jesus crucified was disturbing the status quo of the Roman Occupying Forces of his time, by teaching the subversive concept that Caesar only had power because God allowed it and that God preferred the humble sinner, the poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Roman Occupation above the elite and arrogant military occupiers.
The early followers and lovers of Jesus were called members of THE WAY-being THE WAY he taught one should be; Nonviolent, a Peacemaker and one who did the will of the Father. And, "What does God require? He has told you o'man! Be just, be merciful, and walk humbly with your Lord." -Micah 6:8
2,000 years ago The Cross had NO symbolic religious meaning. When Jesus said: "Pick up your cross and follow me," He was issuing a POLITICAL statement, for the main roads in Jerusalem were lined with crucified agitators, rebels, dissidents and any others who disturbed the status quo of the Roman Occupying Forces.
Israel claims they cannot let Vanunu leave Israel because he still has a 'secret' he has yet to tell about their underground WMD Program in the Dimona, which Vanunu has NOT sent foot into in over 21 years-and international inspectors never have been allowed to tread upon. Yet Israel claims SECURITY as their rational and ignores and denies the risks to their own citizens.
"In mid-November, London's Sunday Times reported that Israel put defenses around its Dimona nuclear reactor on "red alert" 30 times… given the threat of radioactive releases, does the plant's continued operation outweigh the risks? Dimona...is the region's largest nuclear plant and sole producer of atomic weapons materials…Dimona is no Chernobyl. It generates only about 5 percent of that failed Soviet reactor's power. Still, the plant - along with its spent nuclear fuel, extracted plutonium, and nuclear reprocessing waste - poses significant radiological hazards that a military strike [against it] could disperse into the environment…during the June 1967 war Israel shot down one of its own Mirage jet fighters when it strayed over the facility. In 1973, Dimona's defenders downed a wayward Libyan civilian airliner heading for the reactor, killing 108 people. But the 1991 Gulf War upset whatever solace Israel could take from the past. Iraqi Scud missiles hit Tel Aviv, and one came close to hitting Dimona. Hizbullah's bombardment of northern Israel in 2006 further demonstrated the country's vulnerability to missile attack…Dimona has produced all the plutonium that Israel reasonably needs, and the reactor - one of the worlds oldest - has suffered minor mishaps and evident deterioration, raising the specter of more serious accidents." http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=1&categ_id=5&article_id=87599#
"For Caesar, peace is imposed by the might of empire...Peace comes when the sovereignty of God is acknowledged rather than Caesar’s. For people living under occupation or oppression, Caesar has become a symbol of the evil that crushes and enslaves…In the kingdom of God, glory and sovereignty belong to God and not to Caesar. God’s peace is not achieved by crushing and eliminating others but by embracing them. Caesar’s empire is built on violence and military might, God’s empire is built on justice and mercy. Caesar’s peace enslaves and humiliates, God’s peace liberates and restores dignity to the oppressed. Caesar builds walls to separate people, God tears down the walls of separation to join, unify, and reconcile them one with the other. Caesar’s peace is exclusive for a chosen few, God’s peace is inclusive for all regardless of their race or ethnicity. Ultimately, peace will come not from the Caesars and all those who trust in their military might and in the arrogance of their power but from the meek that put their trust in God. It is the meek who will inherit the earth. Peace will come from the labor, toil, and hard work of all those who do not glory in their riches or in their power but glory in their love and service of God and in their love and acceptance of others. God’s message of peace still rings true, not from Annapolis that represents empire, but from the small town of Bethlehem, Palestine that still suffers under occupation. The peace that the Caesars of the world give is largely false and deceptive, and it cannot last. Only the peace that God gives, the peace that is based on justice and truth will survive and prosper."- Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center Jerusalem Statement of December 18, 2007
We are living George Orwell's nightmare in the 21st century; for war is claimed to be the way to peace and nuclear weapons are promised as the way to provide security.
"In Orwell’s 1984…a state or alleged state of war is used to maintain total control over everyone. Lies have replaced truth, and the media serves as propagandist for the Ministry of Truth. This civilian journalist has no hope in the USA Government or MSM to effect change, but I have a flaming hope in the New Fourth Estate who report truth on the World Wide Web and who are the muckrakers of the 21st century but "we have yet to begin to IMAGINE the power and potential of the Internet."-Charlie Rose, 2005

Send Vanunu a message of support through his website:
On January 8, 2008, Mordechai Vanunu's appeal begins fighting a six month jail sentence for speaking to foreign media in 2004, after his release from 18 years in jail, most of it in solitary confinement. Israel maintains that the little man who exposed its WMD Program in 1986 is still a 'security' threat and that he has more secrets he has yet to reveal.
During Vanunu's captivity in East Jerusalem, he has spoken with hundreds of internationals, but he is no longer talking to media. When I last saw him in July 2007 and asked him why, he told me, "All the interviews I have given haven't helped me."
If Israel had allowed Vanunu to leave Israel in 2004 as he desired this committed Christian and civilian journalist would never have met him. But Israel held him under the draconian British Mandate Emergency Regulations in Jerusalem, which among many restrictions forbid him to speak to any foreigners.
After WW II, Attorney Yaccov Shapiro, who later became Israel's Minister Of Justice, described the Emergency Defense Regulations as "unparalleled in any civilized country: there were no such laws in Nazi Germany."[ N.S. Ateek, Justice and Only Justice p.34]
In March, 2006, Vanunu informed me, "This administration tells me I am not allowed to speak to foreigners, the Media, and the world. But I do because that is how I prove my true humanity to the world. My freedom of speech trial began January 25, 2006 for speaking to the media, the same day as the Palestinian elections."
The USA MSM has been missing in action all during Vanunu's historic year and a half long freedom of speech trial. But, in 2005 and 2006, Vanunu spoke with me on video in the spirit of Article 19 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, which Israel's statehood was contingent upon upholding:
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. Article 19
During Vanunu's 18 years in jail, he lived in a tomb sized cell without windows and was psychologically and emotionally tortured. For the first two years Vanunu was deprived of sleep and watched on a camera. A bright light in his cell shone constantly and when ever he closed his eyes, a guard would immediately enter and shine a brighter light into his face and claim they were just checking if he had committed suicide; yet!
On 9/18/04 in London, Yoko Ono awarded Vanunu a peace prize founded in memory of and in the spirit of John Lennon's "Give Me Some Truth" released in 1971.
All I want is the truth Just gimme some truth I've had enough of reading things By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians All I want is the truth Just gimme some truth
And what is truth?
In December 1998, the Anglican Rev. David B. Smith, of Australia, compiled, formatted and published LETTERS FROM SOLITARY: Letters from Mordechai Vanunu to David Smith written during his 11 years of solitary confinement.
Reverend Smith wrote:
I first met Morde late on a Friday night. We were running a little coffee-shop-type setup outside the church building in Kings Cross and Morde just wandered in...His English was not terrific, but we managed some pretty serious conversation at our first meeting. Morde had recently completed studies at university. I had completed university just before entering seminary. Morde had been studying philosophy. I had just completed my honours degree in philosophy! Morde’s interest had been in existentialism. Mine had been also! Morde’s chief figure of interest was Nietzsche – the belligerent German atheist. Mine was Kierkegaard – the eccentric Christian preacher. Morde had read Kierkegaard, and my first introduction to Kierkegaard had been in a course comparing him to Nietzsche. We found we had plenty to talk about.
It was a curious scene that developed that night. Two figures in the middle of the Cross, locked in passionate discussion about theories of meaning and existence. In Morde’s broken English we managed to discuss Nietzsche’s concept of ‘staring into the abyss’ of your life and embracing your despair, and Kierkegaard’s optimistic alternative – throwing yourself into the abyss and finding that the abyss is God and is able to support you.
At the time my own faith was deeply intertwined with these concepts. For Morde though, I don’t think I realized exactly how much was at stake in his thinking until much further down the track. Some months later Morde would embrace the Christian faith, and let go of much of his former life. At an academic level he was also very self-consciously embracing Kierkegaard and rejecting Nietzsche. This is significant, for Kierkegaard was always on about taking ‘risks’, or ‘leaps of faith’, as he would call them.
The one complete work of Kierkegaard that had been translated into Hebrew, and which Morde had read, was his eulogy on Abraham, entitled ‘Fear and Trembling’. In it Kierkegaard reflects on Abraham’s call to go and sacrifice his son Isaac. How can this be right, when it seems to be a betrayal of his family, and is contrary to his reason and even to his conscience? Yet Abraham knows that this is what he has been called to by God, and so he sets out upon his task, albeit with ‘fear and trembling’.
Morde would make his own leap of faith. He would come to the front of St John’s church and say out loud ‘Now I give myself to God. Now I do what I must do.’ True to the Kierkegaardian spirit, Morde made his decision alone...
...It has been extraordinary to read and hear some of the things people have said about Morde – that he was a ‘professional spy’, a ‘trained terrorist’, a ‘brilliant con-man’. How much time did such people spend actually trying to get to know the guy? ‘For God’s sake’ I feel like shouting ‘this man is my friend. You obviously don’t know him at all.’
As clever as Morde was (and is) at an academic level, when it came to the subtle art of spying, Morde was downright naive! I’ll never forget the incident at the airport where Morde misplaced the bag with the entire collection of Dimona photos! Where had he put it? It was found at the top of the escalators, where he had left it when he went to check in! Not exactly the behaviour of a professional secret agent.
The naivete was evident too in the matter of the money he was supposed to be paid. "They say they are going to pay me something for the photos" he told me one Sunday morning. He added "I will give the money to the church here and it will help in the ministry."
On 27th February 1987, Vanunu wrote:
...now I know that my task in this world is to devote myself for working and helping other people, and my task here in Israel is to show that I was born Jewish but I find that JC is our savior. This will not make my life easy here but this faith will keep me strong and make my suffering bearable.......Yet I am not allowed to see a priest. They cannot succeed to take from me one of the most important human rights in a democratic country. I wrote a letter to the Bishop Samir Kafity (Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem) and I asked him to send me one of the priests.......Next week is the trial. I am not worried or afraid because I know what I did and I know who I am. I believe that what happens to me is God’s will, and I will wait for my release.
.......I don’t know a lot about what is going on outside the prison because they keep me isolated. Even my lawyer I see only one time a week, and my brothers every two weeks for one half hour. My parents came to see me one time; they didn’t like my faith. I think someone sent them to me because I know my parents. I am a Christian; they will not come to see me again. I have sorrow for them, but as Jesus said, who wants me must leave his parents and follow me. My brothers are not concerned about my faith. Everyone wants to know why I became a Christian and I send them to learn of Kierkegaard’s philosophy. There I find love and Jesus, and everyone has to open his heart to find this love, and then Jesus will be wherever we might be.......
On 5 June 1987, Vanunu wrote:
…I am spending 24 hours every day alone in a cell reading the Bible and other books. Praying every morning and evening, and trying to know more of God’s words. Here I am alone in my faith but by reading the New Testament I feel encouraged, and it gives me strength. The life of the Lord JC is the way I am following, and his words to the Jews are what I can say to the Jews here today…I feel that the spirit of God is with me all the time, and now here he keeps me alive and gives me the power to stand in this country, and to say the Lord JC is the truth…
On November 27, 1987, Vanunu wrote:
......But now I know that all that they want is to break my faith, my soul, to separate me from my brothers in Christ. So I have to be more concerned about what they are doing. And be stronger in my faith and keep my faith deep in my heart with me here in my small cell......God called me to know him and to be his servant and I accept his mission. All what I have done is from my conscience......I did my decision alone by the voice of God who called me in my heart. And the same thing happened with my action against nuclear weapons. From the beginning it has come to me from my belief from inside - my values, my respect for the human being and the human right. And of course everyone knows and understands all about nuclear weapons - the new holocaust that is hanging over our lives.......
On 28 January, 1989, Vanunu wrote:
...Most of my time here I am using to be very strong in my faith, by reading the New Testament every day in a loud voice and praying......Now I am waiting for my next appeal to the Supreme Court…I was not a spy. And the people here and in all the world have the right to know what their Government has been hiding from them in the nuclear issues. I am not guilty. I did my duty. If I did not have this information, I could not publish it, but God chose those who will do his mission. I believe that I served God’s mission…to do peace, to make the people aware of the nuclear holocaust…No one can change this truth and no one can change my faith and my mind…
In June 2006, Vanunu told me, "When I decided to expose Israel's nuclear weapons I acted out of conscience and to warn the world to prevent a nuclear holocaust...The Dimona is 46 years old; reactors last 25 to 30 years. The Dimona has never been inspected and Israel has never signed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty; but all the Arab states have...Twenty years ago when I worked there they only produced when the air was blowing towards Jordan ten miles away. No one knows what is happening now...
"The only way to peace is peace; the only way is non-violence. The only answer to Israeli nuclear weapons, their aggression, occupation and oppression, the wall and refugee camps is to answer them with truth and a peace-full voice. When I became the spy for the world I did it all for the people of the world. If governments do not report the truth, if media does not report the truth, all we can do is follow our conscience...Israel is the only country in the Middle East where America can right now find WMD's. America can also find where basic human rights have been denied Christians, right here in Israel...
"My Christian conversion was also considered as treason and led to me receiving more time in jail than any murderer has ever served. The Israelis have this very beautiful article about freedom and liberty but they want to destroy anyone who criticizes them for revealing the truth to the world. The world must look and see what kind of democracy Israel is when one speaks out the truth. Israel is not a democracy unless you are a Jew."
Anyone who speaks with Vanunu for even a few minutes will understand that the 'secret' Vanunu has that can harm Israel is bad PR and the example of what happens to truth tellers when governments substitute paranoia for law.

Vanunu's Other Woman from Florida Subtitle: Appeals and Supplications
[East Jerusalem: Occupied Territory] +On September 2, 2007, Mordechai Vanunu's appeal was filed to fight the six month jail sentence he received on July 2, 2007, for speaking his mind to foreign media in Israel in 2004.
For the last three years, Mordecahi Vanunu's speech and movement have been restricted under the British Mandate Emergency Regulations -a relic from the British Mandate period in Palestine-before the state of Israel was founded and replaced British rule in 1948. Nothing like it exists in any democracy in the world. When Vanunu was convicted, he joked, "Perhaps I should turn to the Queen or Tony Blair for justice."
In March 2006, just three months after Vanunu's historic freedom of speech trial in a Mid East democracy began, what played out in court was discussed between us in "30 Minutes with Vanunu" a video commentary by Vanunu on the irony of Israeli democracy implementing the British Mandate Regulations against him and millions of Palestinians, that led him to conclude, "Israel is only a democracy if you are a Jew."
Jeff Halper, American Israeli, Founder and Coordinator of Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions coined the term 'Ethnocracy' to describe Israeli rule; full and equal rights to all Jews, but nobody else. Halper has unequivocally affirmed, "Israeli is not a democracy, it is an Ethnocracy."
The maxim is never meet your hero's, but I am glad I met one of mine. My only regret is that it took me two years to realize the irony and my shortsightedness in not realizing the impossibility of Vanunu trusting another woman from Florida .
From 1986 to 2004, Israel kept Vanunu in a tomb sized cell with no window, most all of it in solitary confinement. Vanunu was drugged and interrogated without legal council and convicted of treason during a closed door trial. For the first two years of incarceration, a camera and light were on constantly. If Vanunu ever did nod off to sleep, "A guard would come and shine a brighter light into my face and say, 'Just checking if you had committed suicide yet.'"
In 2002, President Bush declared U.S. citizen, Jose Padilla an enemy combatant and he was stripped of all rights and detained at a Navy brig in South Carolina where he was held in solitary isolation for 43 months and denied access to an attorney for two years.
Forensic Psychiatrist Angela Hegarty examined Padilla last year and concluded the extreme isolation and torture had left Padilla essentially brain damaged, "What happened at the brig was essentially the destruction of a human being's mind." http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/17/1323250
Padilla is devoid of a personality because of the cruel and inhumane treatment he endured for three and a half years. Vanunu has endured cruel and inhumane punishment for the last twenty-one years and has a challenging personality. Vanunu is justly paranoid for Israeli Security monitors his snail mail, email and telephone calls. He is justifiably angry at the injustice of being prevented from leaving Israel , which is all he has wanted for the last three years.
Speaking to Vanunu in such a place as a post office is guaranteed to gather a swarm of spies of strange kinds, people lacking finesse who would oh, so nonchalantly saunter over to a follow up meeting I requested with Vanunu after crossing paths with him in east Jerusalem . Vanunu insisted we could only meet at the Salah Adin Post Office, next door to the police station. It was not until that meeting, did I realize that this female from Florida had become a part of the Vanunu legend, for both cameras and spies occupy the Salah Adin Post Office.
During my two years of crossing paths with Vanunu scattered amongst five trips to Israel Palestine, I have found Vanunu to be articulate, funny, detached, and distant and I have never failed to ask a question which ended the conversation between us. I crossed paths with Vanunu for the first time most recently o n the third day of my fifth journey to Israel Palestine, July 16, 2007- which is also known as the 9th day of Av, the day the Jewish Temple was destroyed. I was on my way to my hotel on Nablus Road in East Jerusalem just after attending Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions media kick off day for the first of 300 homes to be rebuilt this summer, out of the 18,000 Israel has destroyed since 1967. I was witness to the pouring of the foundation of the new home of the Hamdan clan of nine who still have the deeds to their property that were filled-out during the Ottoman Empire.
In front of me I noticed an old man, hunched over as in the proverbial image of one whose back is breaking under the weight of the world, walking very slowly and talking to himself.
It was not until I passed him by and I recognized the voice that called out to me, "Hi, remember me?"
Then I realized it was Vanunu. I had never seen Vanunu wear sunglasses and he now sports big black frames. Last November, when I saw Vanunu last, he walked as fast as I, [a former New Yorker] but his gait that day, was like any other old man's on the hot streets of Jerusalem in July.
"This is the very spot where they stoned to death the first Christian martyr for freedom of speech," he told me as we had crossed paths in front of St. Stephen's Church. Saint Stephen was the first follower of Jesus to be stoned to death for speaking truth to power 2,000 years ago.
In June 2007, Vanunu emailed me to delete the "30 Minutes with Vanunu" from my website, but he never gave me his reason why. I emailed him back that I could not comply for the video is cross posted on You tube and Information Clearing House and belongs to history. He never emailed me back after that, but now that we were face to face, I asked, "Just exactly why do you want the video deleted from my site?"
"It's not making any money."
"Look, I have no control over people's generosity or lack."
He smiled when he challenged, "If you want to keep running my video, you should pay me $1,000.00 a month."
We both laughed because his brother Meir had the idea that all the media that caused his recent trial and six months conviction should donate at least a thousand dollars to his defense fund. I defended myself anyway, "Look, I never claimed I was a fundraiser. I am a writer and the only way I can really help you is to keep writing your story and running that video. My little 2005 and 2006 videos belong to history now, and we the people must stand up and claim our liberties and rights, or we don't have them. It is only right that it remains on my site because: 'Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. ' -Article 19 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Israel agreed to uphold and was contingent upon their statehood."
Last November Vanunu was frequently attending political and religious meetings. Nine months ago, he was frequently eating out or having a beer with most anyone who would pick up the tab. In July 2007, Vanunu is still soft-spoken and calm, but spends most all day walking the ancient streets of East Jerusalem alone. He will still stop and speak to anyone who speaks to him, but not to any reporters. He quit hanging out at the American Colony six months ago and has moved three times in a year. He reads the newspapers in his $10.00 a night with breakfast room in a time worn building and eats dinner there alone most every night.
Through the years, Vanunu has spoken to many hundreds of internationals about his torture in prison or of being a small boy in Marrakech, uprooted and sent to the desert of Beersheba, where he wandered the streets of the Old City all alone. A solitary throughout his life, it seems as if Vanunu was being 'groomed' to withstand more years in solitary confinement than any other known human being in all of history ever has.
I met Vanunu for the first time, in June 2005, two months after he learned the news that the restrictions against his movement and speech were renewed for another year and he had just disbanded his American campaign.
When Vanunu met me in June 2005, he thought I was interested in a date with him, and I should have been more cognizant of such an eventuality since he had been locked up for 18 years. But since I have been married nearly as long as Vanunu has been in prison, and because he failed high school English, I explained the English translation of "I am married" to mean: an end to that topic of conversation.
From the moment I met Vanunu, and being nine months older than he, I related to him as a sister and never hesitated to speak to him as I would to any of my blood brothers, or any friend. Trouble was it took me two years to see the tragic-comic irony of Vanunu crossing paths with another woman from Florida and the impossibility he would have to ever be able to trust one. Things I said to Vanunu to be a guide, an FYI, a warning; he perceived as a threat. What else could he think after crossing paths in 1986 with Cindy/Cheryl, American from Florida? It was not until my third visit to Jerusalem in March 2006, did I ask Vanunu about Cindy/Cheryl. In 1986 Vanunu thought she was a beautician on holiday, but Cindy/Cheryl, was a spy for the Mossad.
In 1986, Vanunu left London and flew to Rome with Cindy/Cheryl, just days prior to the London Sunday Times publishing the scientific corroboration to the sixty odd photos Vanunu had taken in the underground Dimona WMD plant that proved Israel had gone nuclear.
Legend has it that Vanunu flew to Rome from London with Cindy/Cheryl, just to have sex, although opportunity for that already existed in London. In March 2006, I brought up the topic and asked Vanunu, "What were you thinking?"
He immediately replied, "No, it wasn't like that. A tabloid paper published a story with some of the photos of the Dimona I had taken. They never contacted me for my side of the story but they published my photo with a bad report; lots of lies. I knew I was in danger and I wasn't sure if the Times would still print my story. I thought I would just leave London with her for a few days."
When Vanunu arrived in Rome at what he thought was Cindy/Cheryl's sister's home, he was clubbed, drugged, bound and transported back to Israel in either a small yacht or a cargo ship. Just prior to being driven to his closed door trial, Vanunu had been inspired to write his Rome flight number and the word 'HIJACKED" upon his palm and press it to the window of the van he was being transported in. His inspired move was immortalized by a photographer and so inflamed the Israeli government, that afterwards, when ever Vanunu was being transported to his closed door trial, windows were curtained and he was made to wear a helmet on his head.
Vanunu was naïve not to imagine he would be trapped in such a way, and from the few hours of being in his presence, I can believe he was indeed that naïve. I also laugh every time he accuses me of being, too naïve too.
In July 2007, he was laughing when he said, "You are too naïve. You think you're going to change anything with your website? Maybe a few hundred people a day read anything you say."
I replied, "I know I am just one voice in the wilderness, but there are more like me all the time and all we have are words to fight with. I have a link on my site that tells me the U.S. Government and Military visit me daily, and even if Big Brother were my only readers, it is worth it to me to speak out and agitate them with the truth. It is the right thing to do."
Every time I see Vanunu I always remind him that when I was a child, my dream was to grow up and become Brenda Starr, the ace investigative journalist of the Sunday Comics. Vanunu laughed the last time I brought it up, but when I first told him about Brenda in June 2005, he thought I was nuts for I told him I was convinced that his story would wake up American Christians about the truth in the Holy Land, and I was going to do all I could to tell them his story. Just like Brenda would.
I also told Vanunu how a little boy of Beit Jala, a suburb on the west side of the Little Town of Bethlehem, irrevocably changed my life and how he-Vanunu got caught up in my mind with that little boy of Bethlehem. George's face adorns the banner of my homepage. His photo was taken in 2000, by photographer Debbie Hill, the morning after the Israeli army destroyed his bedroom in retaliation for a few hopeless militants who had infiltrated his once peaceful Christian village to snipe across the way into the illegal settlement/colony of Gilo.
The shrapnel that pierced the wall of George's sanctuary read 'Made in USA ' and was delivered via American made Apache helicopters.
The second I saw George's eyes, in the photo that was first published by the Florida Catholic, my heart said "DO SOMETHING!"
What could I possibly do I wondered, but I did make a copy of the photo, put it in a frame and placed it upon the altar [a bar high table] in the upper room of my home. Dozens of times a day, I would stop and gaze into the eyes of that little boy of Bethlehem and beg God to end the insane cycle of violence in the Holy Land for the sake of all the children who live there and free me from the incessant voice that demands:
"DO SOMETHING!"
All these years later, every time I look at George's eyes-or even think about him-the persistent voice continues the incessant refrain:
"DO SOMETHING!"
When I met George for the first time in June 2005, I vowed to him that the rest of my life will be dedicated to doing all I could to help bring about the end of the occupation of Palestine, which has now entered its 40th year.
In April 2005, two months before my first trip to Israel Palestine, I tuned the TV on and the History channel appeared. They were broadcasting a show called, "Sexpionage" all about Russian female spies and one from the Mossad.
The very clip that ran before my eyes was of Vanunu being transported to his closed door trial depicting his inspired move to write upon his palm: "HIJACKED" and the Rome flight number he had been on. It was the first time I had seen that historic clip and also of Shimon Perez in 1986 stating that Israel would never be the first in the Mid East to possess nuclear weapons.
When a black and white photo of a bearded, unkempt and disheveled Vanunu filled the TV screen, I thought his eyes looked just like George's of Beit Jala's, and I heard in my heart:
"Do Something!"
Vanunu's eyes are nothing like George's of Beit Jala. Vanunu's eyes can be 52, 92, 16 or 6, because Vanunu is all of those ages. Vanunu may never speak to the media again, he may never write his own story. But he has said more with his life than a million words ever could about a solitary man who spoke truth in a democracy that America fully supports which denies the right of a human being the inalienable right to speak to any other and the freedom to leave a place that doesn't feel like home.
On my last afternoon in Jerusalem in July, 2007, I crossed paths with Vanunu again very near to St. Stephens Church. But, that's another story...

On the third day of my fifth journey to Israel Palestine, on July 16, 2007-which is also known as the 9th day of Av, the day the Jewish Temple was destroyed, I was on my way down Nablus Road in East Jerusalem just after attending Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions media kick off day for the first of 300 homes to be rebuilt this summer, out of the 18,000 Israel has destroyed.
I was witness to the pouring of the foundation of the new home of the Hamdan clan of nine who still have the deeds to their property that were filled-out during the Ottoman Empire.
In front of me I noticed an old man, hunched over shoulders, walking very slowly and talking to himself.
It was not until I passed him by and I recognized the voice that called out to me, "Hi, do you remember me?"
That I realized it was Vanunu.
I was on my way back to the American Colony for a swim when we crossed paths in front of St. Stephen’s Dominican Church on Nablus Road.
Vanunu told me, "This is the spot where they stoned to death the first Christian martyr for freedom of speech."
St. Stephen was indeed the very first Christian martyr to be stoned to death for speaking truth to power...
Vanunu isn't giving any more interviews, because, "All the interviews I have given, haven't helped me."
I told him, it's not over yet!......
Just before my first of five journeys to Israel Palestine, a Palestinian American friend warned me, “Don’t visit Vanunu, if you see him; don’t speak to him. He’s not allowed to speak to foreigners and you could cause him trouble.”
I responded, “OK, I won’t track him down, but Jerusalem is a small town and if our paths cross, I will speak to him. What kind of government is that, that will tell a human being who they can and cannot talk with?”
I met Vanunu for the first time in June 2005 and he told me, "When I was in prison my mother came to me and told me that I was suffering because I was a Christian. I know I caused them a lot of pain and they have suffered because of my case. I forgive them even though they rejected me and my Christian faith. I have always thought for myself and made up my own mind.
“I really had no idea what I was doing by getting baptized a Christian, I just felt like I had to do it. It was my way to be a new being. It wasn’t until after my trial that I started to read the New Testament. While I was in prison I would read aloud for ½ hour twice a day. I would read the entire New Testament and begin it again when I finished the Book of Revelation. I did this for me as well as for my captors. Not so much the prison guards but the ones who watched me on camera 24 hours a day.
“The Shen Beet, you know like the FBI and the Mossad, like your CIA were watching me constantly. They tortured me by keeping a light on in my cell constantly for two years. They told me it was because they were afraid I would commit suicide, and the oppressive camera was for my safety. They recruited the guards and other prisoners to irritate me. They would deprive me of sleep by making loud noises near my cell all night long.
“I chose to read them 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 instead; Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with THE TRUTH! It always protects, it always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.
“My human rights have been denied me because I am a Christian. When I was on trial I was treated just like a Palestinian; no human rights at all and cruel and unusual punishment, all because I told the truth.
“The only real way to worship is in loving one’s enemies. It was not easy to love my tormentors, it was only because I felt so much like Jesus crucified on the cross, and me crucified in prison, that I could do it. It was not ever easy. I have forgiven but not forgotten anything and I never will.
“In Israel, a life sentence is 25 years. Even murderers go free after 17. They imposed the same restrictions on me that Palestinians receive; no human rights at all.
“The only way to peace is peace; the only way is non-violence. The only answer to Israeli nuclear weapons, their aggression, occupation and oppression, the wall and refugee camps is to answer them with truth and a peace-full voice. When I became the spy for the world I did it all for the people of the world.
"If governments do not report the truth, if media does not report the truth, all we can do is follow our conscience. Daniel Ellsberg did, the woman from Enron did, and I did. The USA needs to wake up and see the truth that Israel is not a democracy unless you are a Jew.
"Israel is the only country in the Middle East where America can right now find WMD’s. America can also find where basic human rights have been denied Christians, right here in Israel.”
During my March 2006 interview with Vanunu he told me, “When I decided to expose Israel’s nuclear weapons I acted out of conscience and to warn the world to prevent a nuclear holocaust. The Israeli media demonized me. They published many lies about me and Israel kept me totally isolated in prison for most of the 18 years. I am also regarded as a traitor because I was baptized a Christian.
“My Christian conversion was also considered as treason and led to me receiving more time in jail than any murderer has ever served. The Israelis have this very beautiful article about freedom and liberty but they want to destroy anyone who criticizes them for revealing the truth to the world. The world must look and see what kind of democracy Israel is when one speaks out the truth.”
“It’s very sad that Hillary Clinton went to the Jewish Wailing Wall and forgot the real crying wall is the Palestinian wall...the apartheid wall... the wall is not for defense, but to keep this conflict permanent...the people who need the help are the Palestinian Christians. We need all Christians to come and see the true facts on the ground.
“The Dimona is 46 years old; reactors last 25 to 30 years. The Dimona has never been inspected and Israel has never signed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty but all the Arab states have...Twenty years ago when I worked there they only produced when the air was blowing towards Jordan ten miles away. No one knows what is happening now.
“The Israelis have 200 atomic weapons and they accuse the Palestinians and Muslims of terrorism. The world needs to wake up and see the real terrorism is the occupation and the Palestinians have lived under that terror regime for 40 years.
“Israel propaganda portrays all Palestinians as Muslim extremists and Hamas terrorists and neglect that Palestinian Christians are following the true message of Jesus Christ with nonviolent resistance. We need all Christians to come and see the truth for themselves. Israel is only a democracy if you are a Jew."
I once wrote an Op-ed that stated that Vanunu was also a prophet. When he read the piece, he emailed me and in bold letters wrote: “DON’T CALL ME THAT!”
I won’t to his face, but in the spirit of freedom of speech, I cannot help myself. Prophets do NOT predict the future-as much as they point out impending doom. Vanunu pointed the way to the weapons of mass destruction program underground in the Negev desert, and they have yet to receive an International Inspection.
The Hebrew prophet Jeremiah also spent much of his life under house arrest in Jerusalem, for being a truth teller. We know more about the personal life and struggles of Jeremiah than any other Hebrew prophet. Jeremiah, which translates as “The Lord throws”-as in hurling, had few friends and is considered primarily a prophet of doom.
Jeremiah was intensely introspective, self-critical, timid by nature but honest and open about his feelings. Jeremiah never married and began prophesying in Judah from 604-586, a time of storm and stress when the doom of entire nations-including Judah itself-was being sealed. Jeremiah had been the king's friend and confident, but the prophet soon entered a dreary round of persecution and imprisonment, alternating with only brief periods of freedom, and lived under virtual house arrest.
Jeremiah was also labeled a traitor by many for speaking truth to power, “I cannot keep silent…Disaster follows disaster; the land lies in ruins…My people are fools; they do not know me.”-Jeremiah 4:19.

On April 30, 2007 , in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, Mordechai Vanunu was convicted on 14 [out of 21] counts of violating a court order prohibiting him from speaking to foreign journalists in 2004.
Vanunu was also convicted for traveling the four miles from Jerusalem to Bethlehem when he hoped to attend Christmas Eve mass at the Church of the Nativity, his first Christmas after being released from 18 years in jail [most of it in solitary] on April 21, 2004.
On July 2, 2007 he was sentenced to six more months in jail and a six month suspended sentence.
In 2004, "60 Minutes" [in Australia, NOT CBS] and Amy Goodman of DemocracyNow! both interviewed Vanunu.
Neither has yet to do a follow up, but The New Fourth Estate; civilian journalists/bloggers have.
Annually, for the last twenty years Mordechai Vanunu has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This year, Vanunu has been nominated by Bishop Desmond Tutu, who received the Nobel Prize in 1984, for his courageous and fearless opposition against the South African apartheid system.
Instead of Christmas Mass, Vanunu spent the night in jail and charged with attempting to flee Israel. Vanunu also has no passport and has been held under the draconian 1945 British Mandate State of Emergency Regulations, which forbids him from leaving Israel and speaking to media and foreigners, these last three years since his release.
Following the verdict, Vanunu pointed out, "Perhaps I should turn to the Queen or Tony Blair for justice...All that I want is to be free, to leave the country." http://www.serve.com/vanunu/20070430haaretz.html
Israel's statehood was contingent upon its upholding of the UN UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.

Vanunu's historic freedom of speech trial began on January 25, 2006 and concluded on February 2, 2007. The court brought 21 charges against him for giving interviews to foreign media in 2004: but the professional paid media has been missing in action during this historic trial.
Back in 1986, when Vanunu was only a low tech worker in Israel's WMD facility, he easily obtained the keys to the restricted areas after they had been carelessly left in the shower room. Vanunu was able to shoot two rolls of film in the underground WMD facility without detection that proved to the world that Israel was nuclear in 1986.
Instead of Israel being grateful for the alert to the inadequate security in the nuclear reactor facility, they kidnap and lock Vanunu up for 18 years, most all of it in solitary. Vanunu has not set foot into the Dimona in 21 years and International Inspectors never have.
On April 21, 2004, Vanunu was released.
But, NOT free.
He has lived under the draconian 1945 British Mandate State of Emergency Regulations, which forbids him from leaving Israel and speaking to media and foreigners.
I met Vanunu for the first time in June 2005, and I learned about his childhood and why and how he became a Christian just a few weeks before being clubbed, drugged and kidnapped by the Mossad then undergoing a closed door trial.
In March 2006, Vanunu told me,"This administration tells me I am not allowed to speak to foreigners, the Media, and the world. But I do because that is how I prove my true humanity to the world."
Although 'free' for the last three years, "Vanunu has suffered a spate of verbal attacks and threats as a result of his activism from Zionists, both Jewish and Christian. However, given the fact that Israel's nuclear capability is no longer a secret, he feels that the attacks are personal in nature and tied to the fact that he "abandoned the tribe" by converting to Christianity." http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/...
In May 2006, Vanunu informed American Free Press correspondent, Mark Glenn, "that this was something that was a common theme during his prison term, where he would receive regular visits from Shin Bet and Mossad agents who would dangle the bait of parole in front of him if he would just renounce his conversion and "return to the fold." His comments concerning his conversion reveal why "interested parties" might engage in a program of vindictiveness against him:
"In the same way that Jesus criticized Judaism 2,000 years ago, I was unwilling to accept what they teach. The Jews believe that there is only one Chosen People of God and preach their superiority. I decided that after 2,000 years these ideas were nonsense. There are 6 billion people around the world, all equal, all part of the human race. There is no such thing as a super race.
"We should all respect and love each other, and that was the beginning of my rejecting Judaism and accepting the teachings of Jesus Christ and of accepting humanity. Those who teach Judaism control and ruin the lives of those under them, telling them what they must do every hour of every day, but at the same time they do not teach them to respect non-Jews as human beings. This is Judaism, a collection of primitive traditions thousands of years old that has not changed."
He added that "the Jews came to Palestine in the name of their god and took this land and expelled the people and gave them hard, cruel, barbaric lives for the last 60 years. This way of thinking, this faith, cannot exist within this new age, and it was this that also led me to expose Israel's nuclear secrets." http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/...
In June 2005 and March 2006, Vanunu informed this civilian journalist:
"The Shen Beet, you know like the FBI and the Mossad, like your CIA were watching me constantly. They tortured me by keeping a light on in my cell constantly for two years. They told me it was because they were afraid I would commit suicide, and the oppressive camera was for my safety. They recruited the guards and other prisoners to irritate me. They would deprive me of sleep by making loud noises near my cell all night long.
"The Israelis have 200 atomic weapons and they accuse the Palestinians and Muslims of terrorism. The Dimona is 46 years old; reactors last 25 to 30 years. The Dimona has never been inspected and Israel has never signed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty but all the Arab states have."
"Twenty years ago when I worked there they only produced when the air was blowing towards Jordan ten miles away. No one knows what is happening now. The world needs to wake up and see the real terrorism is the occupation and the Palestinians have lived under that terror regime for 40 years.
"It's very sad that Hillary Clinton went to the Jewish Wailing Wall and forgot the real crying wall is the Palestinian wall; the apartheid wall, the wall is not for defense, but to keep this conflict permanent.
"Israel is only a democracy if you are a Jew."
On May 13th Vanunu learned that all the restrictions against him will continue another year.
On June 25, 2007 he will learn how much more time he will spend behind bars for speaking his mind in a Mid East 'Democracy'.
This civilian journalist wonders if "30 Minutes with Vanunu" will be the NEXT testimony used against him in the 'democracy' of Israel.
This civilian journalist, a member of The New Fourth Estate will feel a sense of RESPONSIBILITY if it is.
I wonder too, if feeling a sense of responsibility just might be the difference between paid professional journalists and The New Fourth Estate; who do NOT take orders from Editors or paychecks from conglomerates.

“You cannot talk like sane men around a peace table while the atomic bomb itself is ticking beneath it. Do not treat the atomic bomb as a weapon of offense; do not treat it as an instrument of the police. Treat the bomb for what it is: the visible insanity of a civilization that has ceased...to obey the laws of life.”- Lewis Mumford, 1946
The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures." - William Fulbright
