Our Mission
WAWA/WeAreWideAwake is my Public Service to America as a muckracker who has journeyed seven times to Israel Palestine since June 2005. WAWA is dedicated to confronting media and governments that shield the whole truth.

We who Are Wide Awake are compelled by the "fierce urgency of Now" [Rev MLK, Jr.] to raise awareness and promote the human dialogue about many of the crucial issues of our day: the state of our Union and in protection of democracy, what life is like under military occupation in Palestine, the Christian EXODUS from the Holy Land, and spirituality-from a Theologically Liberated Christian Anarchist POV.

"We're on a mission from God."
The Blues Brothers

"Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all...and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The nation which indulges towards another a habitual hatred or a habitual fondness is in some degree a slave...a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils."

Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. -July 4, 1776. WAWA Blog September 14, 2008: More Questions for the Christian 'Quartet' Pursuing the White House Regarding the Holy Land

Shulamit Aloni, a former Israeli education minister, minister of communication and minister of science and the arts, in her book published last week, condemned "the domination of the apartheid system in the West Bank, the regime's constant refusal to a peace deal for decades and Israelis atrocities in the Palestinian territories…She further linked the 1995 assassination of Israel's then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to legislation of racist laws since the 1980's, raising the possibility that SHABAK (Israel security agency commonly known as the Shin Bet) might have been behind the killing. Aloni recalled the instigations against Rabin and accused Jewish settlers of ' Mussolini's fascism'. Aloni said, "The Israeli rightists and settlers are not after peace but they want the whole Holy Land without Arabs or mosques," and that calling Israel a democracy is a ploy to give Israel an acceptable image in the world's eye."[1]

"Shulamit Aloni slams mistreatment of the Palestinians by Tel Aviv, accusing it of ethnocracy and racism [and] described the 1992 legislation of the so-called law of "Human Dignity and Liberty", which calls Israel a Jewish, democratic regime, in direct contradiction to the Israeli declaration of independence in 1948." [Ibid]

"Israel is a not a democracy but is an Ethnocracy, meaning a country run and controlled by a national group with some democratic elements but set up with Jews in control and structured to keep them in control.”-Jeff Halper, Founder and Coordinator of ICAHD/Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and a Noble Peace Prize Nominee for 2006. [2]

The question to the quartet of professing Christians seeking the White House is are you on the side of democracy or ethnocracy?

President Abbas has presented ideas and demands on the status of Jerusalem, the borders of a Palestinian state, settlements in the West Bank, refugees, security and water resources, but no reply has been received from the Israeli side.

The question for the candidates is and how will an Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin White House deal with a Palestinian partner who is talking and an Israeli partner who is not?

We the people have a right to know where this quartet stands on these issues and all concern human rights. 2008 is the 60th anniversary of Israel, Nakba/Catastrophe and the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights- upon which Israel's very statehood was contingent upon upholding.

We the people need to hear from this quartet of candidates regarding their view of The Wall which does not follow the Green Line and has been deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice and which USA taxpayers provide $1.25+ million per mile to construct.

Where is this quartet of candidates on the continuing of Israeli only settlements-all of which are illegal under international law for all are constructed on legally owned Palestinian property?

Where are the candidates on the 500+ checkpoints that deny the indigenous people of that land the right to access their land, jobs and holy sites?

Since 1949, American taxpayers have provided over $108 billion to Israel and "contrary to ordinary U.S. policy, Israel has been and continues to be allowed to use 26% of this military aid to purchase equipment from Israeli manufacturers. According to the Congressional Research Service, “no other recipient of U.S. military assistance has been granted this benefit.” [3]

Israel’s arms industry is the third strongest in the world and the United States is number one. The U.S.A. has given more money to Israel than to any other country and it has been said that the love of money is at the root of all evil.

2,000 years ago The Cross had NO symbolic religious meaning and was not a piece of jewelry. When Jesus said: "Pick up your cross and follow me" everyone back then understood he was issuing a POLITICAL statement, for the main roads in Jerusalem were lined with crucified agitators, rebels, dissidents and any who disturbed the status quo of the Roman Empire and Military Occupying Forces.

The question to the professing Christian candidates for the White House is how do you reconcile your faith in Jesus, the Prince of Peace who promised it is the peacemakers who are the children of God, with the American-Israeli military empire?

History proves that peace cannot be achieved between any two parties unless both are willing to make concessions and that Israel and Palestine cannot achieve peace on their own.

The question for the candidates is what will you do to ensure that both parties adhere to their obligations, which includes a freeze on settlements by Israel as well as an end to Palestinian violence?

In 1947, approximately 20% of the total population of the Holy Land was Christian, 20% Jewish and the rest Palestinian Muslim. Today, the Christian Exodus has rendered the numbers of the most educated of the population to less than 1.3% of the total. A viable Palestinian state that would foster religious diversity and a pluralistic tolerant Palestinian society is in grave danger due to the indigenous Christians emigrating because of the political and economic conditions that have resulted due to the ongoing 41 years of military occupation.

The question for the candidates is will you visit your sisters and brothers in Christ in their communities and in their institutions when you next visit Israel?

Jerusalem is a city that is sacred to the three faiths of the Holy Land. Jerusalem is politically and culturally significant to Jew, Christian and Muslim and a just and durable peace will require a negotiated solution.

The question for the candidates is do you support longstanding American policy that the issue of Jerusalem be determined through mutual negotiations between two parties and are you willing to be an honest broker for peace and not be influenced by religious ideology?

The bipartisan Iraq Study Group asserted that "all key issues in the Middle East-the Arab-Israeli conflict, Iraq, Iran, the need for political and economic reforms, and extremism and terrorism-are inextricably linked" and that the United States "cannot achieve its goals in the Middle East unless it deals directly with the Arab-Israeli conflict and regional instability."[4]

We the people need to know if this quartet of candidates will support diplomacy and be an honest broker for peace who will deal with all sides as equals which will demonstrate moral leadership and bolster U.S. national security interests. The question to the candidates is will they support the indirect Israel-Syria talks mediated by Turkey or insist that only America can offer plans and road- maps?

We the people need leaders who will support direct and sustained negotiations with Iran and work with the international community to address Iran's nuclear ambitions as well as demand Israel open up the underground Dimona nuclear weapons facility in the Negev that has never allowed International Atomic Energy Inspectors into.

Another question for the Christian quartet running for the White House is if they will stand up for freedom of speech and movement for their brother in Christ, Mordechai Vanunu, who returns to court in Jerusalem on September 23, 2008. He will then learn if he will serve six more months in jail for speaking to foreign media in 2004 after his release from 18 years in jail for telling the world the truth that in 1985, Israel was building as many as 200 nuclear warheads.

No doubt the Christian quartet for the White House have all heard Genesis 12:3:

"I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse: and in you all the families of the world are blessed."

The question for the candidates is do you think God meant blessings to be political power and military might or justice and peace?

The first mention of Israel in Genesis is when Jacob was renamed Israel for having wrestled and struggled with God.

The question for the candidates is, do you understand that Israel is more than a 20th century geographical location and that anyone who struggles and wrestles with God is also Israel?

We the people need to know if these candidates adhere to the Christian fundamentalist interpretation that the modern state of Israel is the fulfillment of prophetic scriptures, and that God’s covenant with Israel is eternal and exclusive, or will our next Christian professing president follow what Jesus actually commanded which is that to be forgiven one must forgive and one must love their enemies, bless their enemies, pray for their enemies and always be nonviolent.

Another question to the candidates is do you have eyes to see that supporting 41 years of military occupation and the building of settlements on stolen Palestinian land combined with a theology that believes every act of the secular state of Israel is being orchestrated by God and should therefore be condoned, supported, and even praised, is what is at the root of anti-American and anti-Christian feelings in the Middle East?

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

© 1968, 2001 Kent M. Keith

" In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway."-Mother Teresa

“You cannot talk like sane men around a peace table while the atomic bomb itself is ticking beneath it. Do not treat the atomic bomb as a weapon of offense; do not treat it as an instrument of the police. Treat the bomb for what it is: the visible insanity of a civilization that has ceased...to obey the laws of life.”- Lewis Mumford, 1946

The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures."  - William Fulbright

“Any nation that year after year continues to raise the Defense budget while cutting social programs to the neediest is a nation approaching spiritual death.” - Rev. MLK
Establishment of Israel
"On the day of the termination of the British mandate and on the strength of the United Nations General Assembly declare The State of Israel will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel: it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion it will guarantee freedom of religion [and] conscience and will be faithful to the Charter of the United Nations." - May 14, 1948. The Declaration of the Establishment of Israel
